Ponta do Sol
Today the island of Santo Antão in Cape Verde is a much appreciated hiking and trekking destination for adventurous travellers from all over the world. But 10 years ago seeing a tourist walking around the lovely vilages was a rarity.
With the development of the country and improvement of infrastrucutre tourism began to grow. Santo Antão is one of Cape Verde's biggest islands, but has seen less investment than islands like Santiago, São Vicente and Sal.
A couple from Ponta do Sol started to notice the arrival of more and more tourists in their village. With their kids growing up and moving out of the house Sissi and her husband Bernard saw an opportunity to fill the demand for affordable accommodation.

Hiking and Trekking
Ponta do Sol is a charming village in the northern part of Santo Antão. It has a pretty little fishing harbour, a beautiful town square that houses several colonial buildings and it's surrounded by a spectacular landscape. Also, and maybe most importantly, it is the start of one of the islands best hiking trails. This 4 hour coastal hike leads all the way from Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha.
Sissi and Bernard named their bed and breakfast 'Casa Familiar'. The B&B started out with 3 rooms on the ground floor of their house. Currently the couple is working on expanding the bed and breakfast on the 2nd floor of the house.

Sissi and her family live on the first floor. "When people stay with us we like to make them feel as if they are home, almost as if they are part of the family. That's why I chose the name 'Casa Familiar'."
The B&B gets a lot of compliments about the breakfast they serve the guests. Bernard explains: "I have to be honest here. Sissi prepares breakfast for the guests, so I can't take credit for it. But we know most of our guests come to Santo Antão to do some serious hiking, so they need to eat well in the morning to be ready."
To get to the bed and breakfast of Sissi and Bernard in Ponto do Sol simply ask the driver of the 'Hiace' to drop you off at their house. The 'Hiace' drivers from the village know where to go.
