I have been hosting guests in Mindelo since I arrived here in 2014. A year earlier, I had left my office job in Rotterdam. Both my parents were born and raised in Mindelo, but left Cape Verde at a young age to find work in Europe. For me, the adventure was all about experiencing my city, island and country on another level. Instead of short, yearly holidays, I wanted to know how real life would be. Fast forward to 2020, and I can honestly say that it's a decision I will never regret.
Early on I had my own ideas about tourism here in Cape Verde. I think that, especially here in Mindelo, backpackers and budget travelers are overlooked. Most people here in Cape Verde believe in one group of tourists, the ones with a lot of money to spend. I, however wanted to focus on the group I fit in myself. I've even traveled 'No Budget' in the past, when I did a bike trip through South America in 2016/2017.
After having rented out two small 'Budget Rooms' in the city center of Mindelo, and also two 'Homestay' projects, I now have someting new. You can now book your stay with me (and for the first time through the blog) in a new and improved 'Budget Room'. Other than the other rooms I rented out earlier, I have a strong emotional connection with this one. The house, which was built by my grandfather, is owned by my parents. A house they worked incredibly hard for.
The spacious 3-bedroom apartment is on the 2nd floor of the building. At the moment, I'm just hosting guests in one (bed)room of the apartment. Guests also have access to the large kitchen, where you can enjoy a take out meal or have a cup of coffee in the morning. I plan to start using the other bedrooms towards the end of 2020.
With this place for backpackers and other budget travelers I hope to add to the low number of options when it comes to low budget accommodation in Mindelo, giving guests the opportunity to see more of Cape Verde. The new Budget Room is also very simple. But, with a new and comfortable matress and a spacious room. I believe the price/quality relation is a good one.
The room has a bed with a brand new matress, two nigthstands/chairs, frigobar (minifridge), waterheater, table/chairs. Attached to the room there is balcony (with windows), which is perfect for smokers. I can't offer WiFi at the moment, but hope to change this soon. The bathroom has a toilet and bath/shower with warm water.
Guests are also free to use the large roofterrace to enjoy the sunrise or sunset, or just relax a bit while enjoying a very nice view of the city. The new Budget Room is located just outside the city center. Laginha Beach is a 10 minute walk away, and the port 15 minutes. Gasstation Enacol Fonte Meio is 200m from the accommodation, and is usually the meeting point.
